ABOUT THE LOYOLA FOUNDATION, INC.
In 1957, Albert G. McCarthy, Jr., his wife Kathleen, and their children, A.G. McCarthy III and Kathleen Denise Hattler, established a family foundation dedicated to the missionary spirit of the Catholic Church.

Unique among its US peers, The Loyola Foundation is primarily dedicated to supporting overseas Catholic missionary activities, focusing in particular on the Church's work in developing nations.

The Foundation's Board of Trustees is comprised of descendants of the founder, distinguished clergy, prominent business leaders, and noted attorneys. They bring to the task of grant making a vital blend of family sensibility, faith-based perspectives and secular know how.

At the outset, the Foundation began supporting the overseas missions of the Jesuits, the Maryknoll Fathers and other Catholic organizations who would in turn distribute funds to particular projects. Since then, the focus has shifted toward the funding of individual projects whose beneficiaries may submit grant requests on their own behalf directly to the Foundation.

To-date, The Loyola Foundation has awarded more than $45 million in small grants, benefitting some 6,000 projects around the world, today focusing in particular on those projects that may not receive sufficient support from traditional funding sources. With a particular focus on concrete, practical needs in the 'here and now,' Foundation grants have included funding for vehicles, equipment, computers, and other educational materials, as well as for the construction of wells, solar power facilities, churches and community halls.

The Loyola Foundation does not award grants to individuals or in support of operating budgets, scholarships, tuition, endowments or any other projects requiring ongoing subsidies. Requests must be capital in nature and priority goes to those projects that are self-sustaining upon completion as well as to those projects that demonstrate local communities' support and active participation.

The Loyola Foundation does not solicit outside funding. Accordingly, its grant-making ability is limited to modest-size projects or support for the completion of larger-scale initiatives. For projects costing more than $50,000 to be eligible, funding for at least 75 percent of the total cost must already be in place.

The Loyola Foundation considers only one grant per diocese in a given calendar year. In each year's funding cycles, the total amount in grant requests always exceeds the foundation's budget. Therefore, some worthy projects may not be approved for funding. Applicants are encouraged to submit grant requests to other organizations at the same time as they are applying to The Loyola Foundation. See also Grant Guidelines and Frequently Asked Questions.
